From 0 to 60: Corinna and Jakob are organizing the Fête de la Musique in Lüneburg
With great dedication and enthusiasm, Corinna and Jakob have brought the Fête de la Musique to Lüneburg for the very first time – and made a remarkable statement right from the start: for the inaugural edition, they have already succeeded in putting together a programme of over 60 concerts at more than 20 venues across the entire city.
Under the umbrella of mosaique – Haus der Kulturen e.V., they have brought together a broad network of cultural venues, initiatives, musicians and volunteers in a short space of time. The result is a vibrant city full of music, encounters and cultural diversity on 21 June – very much in the spirit of the Fête de la Musique, which makes music accessible to everyone and brings people together in public spaces.

"The Centre Français de Berlin, as a Franco-German youth and cultural centre, has been part of the Fête de la Musique for over 15 years. Our goal is to give local and international artists — particularly young newcomer bands — a stage in front of a very mixed audience here in Wedding. The Fête is the cultural export from Paris, and since the Centre is involved in the twin-city partnership between Paris and Berlin, we have been sending bands from partner cities to their respective Fête stages since 2008, and have since expanded this to third countries. Our focus is on organising a very sustainable Fête and keeping the carbon footprint as low as possible — we make use of existing local resources and 99% of people come to us by bike or metro."
ONE French idea travels
the world
From one idea in France, a worldwide movement was born: today, people in countless countries celebrate the Fête de la Musique on 21 June, together making a statement for cultural participation, encounter and the unifying power of music.
-
The Fête de la Musique was founded in France in 1982 and has since grown into a worldwide movement. Today it is celebrated in more than 1,000 cities around the world, bringing people together through music, cultural diversity and shared experiences in public spaces.
The name "Fête de la Musique" is itself a deliberate play on words: it derives from the French phrase "Faites de la musique" — meaning "Make Music". And that remains the idea to this day: to invite people to make music themselves, to make music visible and audible, and to experience culture together in public spaces.
In many countries, the Fête de la Musique is also celebrated under the name "Make Music Day". Despite the different names, all events share the same idea: music should be freely accessible, bring people together and bring cities and communities to life on 21 June.
Every Fête de la Musique is unique. Everywhere, dedicated organisers shape their programmes according to what is possible locally — whether in major cities or small communities, with large stages or spontaneous street concerts. It is precisely this openness and diversity that makes the Fête de la Musique a truly special international cultural event.
-
The Fête de la Musique is part of a worldwide network and is today celebrated in more than 1,000 cities around the globe — in many countries also under the name "Make Music Day". The international network is currently coordinated from New York and connects representatives of the participating countries in regular exchange.
The German representation of the Fête de la Musique is closely linked with international network partners and actively contributes to global collaboration.
The nationwide network of Fête de la Musique Deutschland was largely built up by Simone Hofmann. In 2017 she handed over the licensing office to Sabine Busmann, Managing Director of MusikZentrum Hannover gGmbH.
Since 2024, Morena Piro has been coordinating Fête de la Musique Deutschland and is committed to expanding nationwide and international partnerships. Since then, the network has been growing continuously.
Today the network connects cities and municipalities, Institut français, cultural institutions, associations, players in the music industry and numerous volunteers across Germany.

The Fête de la Musique stands for cultural democracy, social cohesion and the unifying power of music. Together with local organisers, spaces are created for cultural participation, diversity and co-creation.
The nationwide network makes social and cultural policy topics such as democracy, sustainability, inclusion, diversity and cultural education visible and develops them collaboratively. The foundation is the principles of cultural democracy: equal access to culture, participation and co-creation, diversity of cultural expression, the promotion of creativity, and inclusion and representation.
The goals of the network are to build sustainable structures for organisers, strengthen amateur music-making and music education, expand venue options, and actively embed social themes into the Fête de la Musique. At the same time, international collaboration continues to be developed.

The Fête de la Musique Leipzig has been organised since its founding in 2012 by the Institut français Leipzig and the Deutsch-Französische Gesellschaft in Leipzig e. V. Together with long-standing partners Moritzbastei and WERK 2 Kulturfabrik, the music festival was brought to life in Leipzig and successfully established.
Leipzig is one of the pioneer cities of the Fête de la Musique in Germany. To this day, close Franco-German collaboration remains the foundation of the event. A dedicated organising team coordinates the many contributors, venues and partner institutions every year. With now more than 40 stages and venues, the Fête de la Musique Leipzig is one of the largest and most diverse events of its kind in Germany.
